Professor Shennan surveys Louis XIV’s reign in three broad, interrelated sections. He considers the first the character and outlook of the King and the extent to which his beliefs were modified during his lifetime of power.
The second section considers Louis’s domestic policy, and the third provides a lucid analysis of Louis’s foreign policy and its ultimate movement from a purely dynastic war to a search for a kind of collective security.
In an epilogue he considers the reasons for the fascination which the Sun King’s personality and achievements have had, and continue to have, for succeeding generations.
